On Our Own Indie
Publishing
"The
aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things,
but their inward significance."
Aristotle
What is Indie Publishing?
Five major publishing
companies are in charge of the bulk of acquisitions for books. Because
they are in business to make money, they accept books they're fairly
sure they can make money on and no others. This makes sense for them,
of course, but as they can only put so many per year, this leaves many
authors out of the world of big publishing.
Small publishers, which
are springing up all over the internet because of the availability of
print-on-demand technology, help to fill the gap. Still, they each have
specialties and limits.
Indie Publishing includes
any method an author uses to make his/her work available to the public.
This includes:
~ Self-publishing -- taking your print-ready documents and designed
cover to a printer and purchasing a minimum number of books to sell.
It is not unusual for a minimum print run to be 1,000 books and the
price of each book can vary with the minimum number chosen.
~ POD Company publishing -- paying a company a set-up fee for making
your book available to the public, and often includes distribution packages
More info to come,
including an overview article about the basics of publishing and comparison
between publishing with traditional companies and publishing on your
own.
